Mental Health Book Recommendations From Those Who Struggle

Mental Health Book Recommendations From Those Who Struggle Today is the World Health Organizations official World Mental Health Day. The theme for this years day of discussing and highlighting the importance of mental health is that of young people and mental health in a changing world. This is a topic near and dear to my heart, and its a topic thats near and dear to the incredible people who contributed raw, brave, and smart essays and art to my recently-released anthology (Dont) Call Me Crazy: 33 Voices Start The Conversation About Mental Health. The statistics about mental health and adolescents are sobering. Roughly one out of every five teens under the age of 18 struggle with mental illness. Depression accounts for one of the leading illnesses and disabilities in this same age group, and the third leading cause of death in this same demographic is suicide. But as much as knowing thisâ€"and living it, either via ones memory of youth or by witnessing and working with todays adolescentsâ€"can be scary, there is hope. Culturally, were fostering more open dialog about mental health, and more and more communities throughout the United States are offering resources to their teens via school psychologists and counseling. Its far from perfect, but these first small steps lead to greater leaps. Another thing thats certainly fostering dialog and better understanding is the growth in YA books about mental illness. The more representation of mental health, the more opportunities to see the ways it plays out. In honor of World Mental Health Day, I asked some of the contributors to (Dont) Call Me Crazy to share some of the books about mental health and mental illness which have had a big impact on their lives. Ive also included some of the books theyve written, in order to offer up some excellent reading in the world of mental health. These books are appropriate for teens and adults. Descriptions from books by contributors come from Goodreads. Descriptions from contributors are their own. If you have any mental health or mental illness books that you find important and powerful, please leave them in the comments. There is always room for more. Books About Mental Illness Mental Health Reasons to Stay Alive  by Matt Haig: This right here is hands down the best book about living with depression and anxiety. Bite-sized chapters, lists, and anecdotes make it a perfect book to keep in your back pocketâ€"just in case. â€"Ashley Holstrom History Is All You Left Me by Adam Silvera When Griffins first love and ex-boyfriend, Theo, dies in a drowning accident, his universe implodes. Even though Theo had moved to California for college and started seeing Jackson, Griffin never doubted Theo would come back to him when the time was right. But now, the future hes been imagining for himself has gone far off course. To make things worse, the only person who truly understands his heartache is Jackson. But no matter how much they open up to each other, Griffins downward spiral continues. Hes losing himself in his obsessive compulsions and destructive choices, and the secrets hes been keeping are tearing him apart. If Griffin is ever to rebuild his future, he must first confront his history, every last heartbreaking piece in the puzzle of his life. The Beauty That Remains by  by Ashley Woodfolk: This book is centrally about the grief of three separate characters, often weaving in their social media presences in this character-driven, voice-y way that I think will particularly engage teen readers. So much of Shays experience with panic/anxiety rang true to me, and I particularly appreciated the treatment of therapy in the story, including that therapy/treatment can be especially stigmatized in the Black community. Ashley speaks more about that  here. â€"Emery Lord The Color of My Mind: Mental Health Narratives from People of Color  edited by Dior Vargas (available here) The Color Of My Mind is a photo essay based on the viral online photo series entitled the People Of Color and Mental Illness Photo Project launched in September 2014 by Dior Vargas. The project started as a result of Dior noticing an unfortunate trend in the homogenization and misrepresentation of mental health conditions and the people affected by them. Now, this photo essay seeks to highlight the diversity in the mental health community. The Color Of My Mind visually depicts the experiences of 34 individuals as they discuss their struggles, strengths, and lessons learned while living life as a person of color with a mental illness. There Is No Right Way To Meditate by Yumi Sakugawa Take a Moment and Breathe! With Yumis uplifting guidance, you will dig deeper into your soul to discover the tranquility already surrounding you. My Heart and Other Black Holes by  by Jasmine Warga follows two teens who make a suicide pact. One of the things this book absolutely nails for me is dark humor. Theres a wry, deadpan line that runs through Aysels narration, like glittery black veins through a slab of marble. I not only relate; I found that the levity made the experience of being within a depressed persons POV much easier. I wont spoil the end, but I will say that the end felt satisfying without feeling too easy. â€"Emery Lord Charm and Strange by Stephanie Kuehn When you’ve been kept caged in the dark, it’s impossible to see the forest for the trees. It’s impossible to see anything, really. Not without bars…   Andrew Winston Winters is at war with himself. He’s part Win, the lonely teenager exiled to a remote Vermont boarding school in the wake of a family tragedy.  The guy who shuts all his classmates out, no matter the cost. He’s part Drew, the angry young boy with violent impulses that control him. The boy who spent a fateful, long-ago summer with his brother and teenage cousins, only to endure a secret so monstrous it led three children to do the unthinkable. Over the course of one night, while stuck at a party deep in the New England woods, Andrew battles both the pain of his past and the isolation of his present. Before the sun rises, he’ll either surrender his sanity to the wild darkness inside his mind or make peace with the most elemental of truthsâ€"that choosing to live can mean so much more than not dying. The Memory of Light by Francisco X. Stork I’m a huge fan of Francisco X. Stork, who experienced his first serious bout of depression in his teens. While the “waking up in the hospital after a suicide attempt” story has been done a lot of times, it’s done well here, as Vicky and the people around her come to life and are at times pretty funny, dark, and sad as she faces up to the “after” of her failed suicide attempt. â€"s.e. smith Not Just Me: Anxiety, Depression, and Learning To Embrace Your Weird by Lisa Jakub Lisa Jakub has always been a little weird. Sensitive. Emotional. Introverted. What else would you expect from a former child actor turned writer? But the issue wasn’t just an artistic temperament; Lisa was constantly trying to hide her debilitating anxiety and depression. She assumed that retiring from her eighteen-year acting career and leaving Hollywood was going to be the cure for all of her issues. Guess how that worked out? Lisa was still having three panic attacks a day and found it hard to leave her house. But when anxiety-induced vomiting claimed the life of her iPodâ€"she knew it was time to get help. It was time to talk about the things that are hard to talk about. She started to embrace her weird. In searching for a deeper understanding of mental wellness, Lisa explored her own history and reached out to others to learn how anxiety and depression impacted their lives. She interviewed Veterans with PTSD and ten-year-olds with sensory integration issues, people with eating disorders and cutting habits, those whose lives were saved by medication and those who found yoga to be the answer. She went to Colorado to learn about the effects of cannabis on anxiety, and attended a meditation retreat in North Carolina to sit quietly for hours and hours and hours in “noble silence.” Without a phone. Not Just Me is a hopeful, entertaining, enlightening look at the root causes of anxiety, the latest research on mood disorders, and ideas for how we can all live authentically with more peace, power, and purpose. Part memoir, part journalistic explorationâ€"this book reminds all of us that we are not alone. Far From You by Tess Sharpe In childhood, Sharpe experienced anxiety, depression, and several suicide attempts, and found her lifeline in young adult fiction. She returned the favor with Far From You, featuring Sophie, who is trying to figure out who killed her best friend after a life turned upside-down by a car accident, a series of painful surgeries, and a dependence that became an addictionâ€"though I do wish to note, as did Sharpe herself when we discussed Sophie’s depiction, that being dependent on pain management (or any medication) isn’t wrong, and questions of addiction and abuse arise when a need (pain control) becomes a want (the psychoactive effects of opiates). â€"s.e. smith Soft Spots: A Marines Memoir of Combat and Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder by Clint Van Winkle Marine Sergeant Clint Van Winkle flew to war on Valentines Day 2003. His battalion was among the first wave of troops that crossed into Iraq, and his first combat experience was the battle of Nasiriyah, followed by patrols throughout the country, house to house searches, and operations in the dangerous Baghdad slums. But after two tours of duty, certain images would not leave his memoryâ€"a fragmented mental movie of shooting a little girl; of scavenging parts from a destroyed, blood-spattered tank; of obliterating several Iraqi men hidden behind an ancient wall; and of mistakenly stepping on a soft spot, the remains of a Marine killed in combat. After his return home, Van Winkle sought help at a Veterans Administration facility, and so began a maddening journey through an indifferent system that promises to care for veterans, but in fact abandons many of them. From riveting scenes of combat violence, to the gallows humor of soldiers fighting a war that seems to make no sense, to moments of tenderness in a civilian life ravaged by flashbacks, rage, and doubt, Soft Spots reveals the mind of a soldier like no other recent memoir of the war that has consumed America. In my essay for (Dont) Call Me Crazy, one of my biggest questions is why my mother refused help time and time again after she was diagnosed with schizophrenia. It hurt to know that in many ways, my mother and I were living in different worlds, and she was choosing to stay in the world inside her head. For years, I never understood her choices. But when I started seeing a therapist myself, I wanted to better understand the disorders members of my family had been diagnosed with: schizophrenia, depression, bipolar disorder. My therapist and I are both avid readers, and I think by having that common ground, she knew where to direct me and my questions. In a way, she was speaking my language. One of the first books she recommended to me was Far From the Tree: Parents, Children and the Search for Identity by Andrew Solomon. The book is geared mostly toward parents who are raising children under various challenging circumstances: In addition to a chapter on raising children with schizophrenia, other chapters introduce readers to children who were conceived in rape, children who are prodigies, children who have autism, and more. As a sister and as a child of people facing mental illness, I have found it enlightening to read such humane profiles of people who share my familys diseases. The chapter on schizophrenia, in particular, shows the many facets of a human being battling disease. Solomon writes that sometimes, patients have a hard time deciding whether [they want] to be in the real world or that other world [in their heads]. One patient, Solomon writes, doesnt want to stop listening to the voices in his headâ€"over time, theyve become his friends. Part of what Ive found so damaging about the silence around mental illness is that for much of my life, Ive had to rely on depictions in films and TV to have any sense of what members of my family were going through. For so long, portrayals of mental illness in media were exaggerated and insensitive, and it was incredibly damaging to my ability to understand and empathize with people who were struggling. By reading Solomons informative, yet heartfelt profiles, I can start to get a sense of just how complex a persons life can beâ€"and I can see how a mental health diagnosis is far from a sentence to a life without love. â€"Hannah Bae The Collected Schizophrenias by Esmé Weijun Wang (February) An intimate, moving book written with the immediacy and directness of one who still struggles with the effects of mental and chronic illness,  The Collected Schizophrenias  cuts right to the core. Schizophrenia is not a single unifying diagnosis, and Esmé Weijun Wang writes not just to her fellow members of the collected schizophrenias but to those who wish to understand it as well. Opening with the journey toward her diagnosis of schizoaffective disorder, Wang discusses the medical communitys own disagreement about labels and procedures for diagnosing those with mental illness, and then follows an arc that examines the manifestations of schizophrenia in her life. In essays that range from using fashion to present as high-functioning to the depths of a rare form of psychosis, and from the failures of the higher education system and the dangers of institutionalization to the complexity of compounding factors such as PTSD and Lyme disease, Wangs analytical eye, honed as a former lab r esearcher at Stanford, allows her to balance research with personal narrative. An essay collection of undeniable power,  The Collected Schizophrenias  dispels misconceptions and provides insight into a condition long misunderstood. When I randomly stumbled upon Hyperbole and a Half, back when it only existed as a blogspot site (with an admittedly huge following), I felt like Id finally found something deeply relatable, not just in terms of foiled attempts at adulting, being weird and kind of very awkward, but, importantly, in terms of the day-to-day impact of mental illness. I struggled with self-image issues throughout my teens, which contributed to the anxiety and depression Ive struggled with all of my adult life. But I, like many others, found it difficult to express what I was going through to family, friends, and therapists; much of my battle was waged in isolation. When I read Hyperbole and a Half, and, specifically, Adventures in Depression, I felt seen in a way I never had before. With her simple, effective drawings and sharp, genius satire, Broshs comics made me feel less alone, and they gave me much, much needed laughter. â€"S. Martin Luther King Jr. And Gandhi - 1437 Words

One of the most inspirational books written that influenced people such as Martin Luther King Jr. and Gandhi is Civil Disobedience. Written by Henry D. Thoreau and based on his live relieving experience at Walden s Pond provides us with a new way to look at our lives. Civil Disobedience is a book that provides a new life changing experience. Thoreau’s time at Walden Pond is described as an experiment in living deliberately which he furthers to describe as living with a purpose, making choices, and having self-reliance. Firstly, to live deliberately means to live with a purpose. Thoreau argues that many people live without a purpose because they do not have much time for themselves. People have practically a list of things to do every day, which may resemble other people s list. For most college students, college is the only place where they have free time. We go weeks and even months without never confronting complex problems since we are always technically doing the same thi ng. Since we typically do the same thing every day, it causes us to go in auto-pilot, which means we have no time but to be machines(Thoreau 7). We place so much on us that it is overwhelming and as a result, we end up feeling like we have little time for ourselves. Living with a purpose also means living in the moment. Romeo And Juliet Compare and Contrast free essay sample

â€Å"My bounty is as boundless as the sea, My love as deep; the more I give to thee, The more I have, for both are infinite. † Love is one of the most powerful things that exists, love has the power to cause jubilant behavior and but still has the power to cause complete sorrow. A very well-known and highly recognized play where love demonstrates its ability is in Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare. One of the most unique things about love is that it doesn’t have an expiration date, in other words, time and date don’t matter; love has always been and always will be the same. In Romeo and Juliet love is demonstrated through the one and only, Romeo and Juliet. The couple is fiercely in love until they realize that they cannot be together due to their position in social groups; Romeo is a Montague while Juliet is a Capulet. We will write a custom essay sample on Romeo And Juliet Compare and Contrast or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page Equivalent to this situation is Maria and Tony in the movie, West Side Story. In the movie, West Side Story, there is a conflict between ethnic gangs. Maria is a part of the â€Å"sharks† while Tony on the other hand, is a part of the â€Å"jets. † One can begin to see the similarities between situations but also begin to see differences like their time periods. Romeo and Juliet takes place in the 1500’s while West Side Story takes place in the recent 1950’s. Although both of the settings are in completely different times love allows them to share many similarities such as, the fact that in both, the play and the movie, they fall in love at first sight, the main male character kills a member of the opposing/rival group, and they both have the conflict of being part of opposing groups. In this book, as well as the movie, love is a very important theme that is portrayed. One, as the reader, can really see the power and strength of love when they fall in love at first sight in both stories. While being faced with the conflict of being from opposing groups, one can really see what people are willing to do when in love. For example, in both stories the main male characters, Romeo and Tony, are forced to kill one of the people from their lover’s side. At this point one can agree that their feelings towards their â€Å"love† have gotten the best of them. The thing about love is that only the people who experience it understand it. People may say that killing another person for love may be a little out of sight but in their situation it was their only option. Both Romeo and Tony are willing to risk just about anything so that they can be with their one and only â€Å"love. † Tony and Romeo falling in love at first sight in both of the stories that take place in completely different places and times, prove my point that love doesn’t have an expiration date. Love will be around forever and I think that the author, William Shakespeare and the director of the movie, DIRECTOR, do a very well job of authenticating he power of love and demonstrating its power. For the people that have never experienced the feeling of â€Å"love† have a really hard time adapting to this concept of doing anything for that person. Im sure that in the both of the stories, their only goal was to be with their lovers and be left alone to be happy, but as we all know, that cannot be due to their position in their social life.

This considerable transformation attracts attention to the power of franchising if executed appropriately. The McDonald’s franchise operates as a food service retailer with a particular interest in hamburgers, fries, chicken, breakfast items, salads and milkshakes. The business adopted the franchising concept upon the realization that the demand for their products was considerably increasing. In this regard, it needed to expand its coverage and cater for more consumers. The McDonald’s uses agents to operate its outlets in different locations. This strategy is crucial, especially concerning operations outside America, in reducing operation costs and maintaining the quality of products. In addition, it helps shied the business from various aspects of corporate exposure. Despite the high demand for its products, the McDonald’s management ensures that prices remain affordable. Since even the low-income earners can afford McDonald’s products, the franchise has a huge customer base. This has enabled the franchise to retain its market dominance. Considering the rapidly changing market and consumer preferences, the McDonald‘s keeps revising its products to ensure they remain valid. Outside America, the McDonald’s ensures the integration of local cultures into its menu items. To start a franchise in the food service industry, one has to incur various costs. The costs vary depending on factors such as the franchise type, location and equipments. In food retailing, the main consideration at entry is sufficient non-borrowed personal resources. This is crucial concerning the setting up of an operation base. In addition, one has to pay the franchise fee, which ensures that the franchisee can use the franchisor’s brand and access support in various aspects such as marketing and training. An Opportunity cost refers to the benefits forgone by producing a good or service. For example, considering a limited budget, allocating resources to a certain type of surgery means that other departments under the same pool of resources will operate under fewer resources and thus may not function effectively. A startup business has to incur the costs associated with such options. The opportunity cost in this scenario is the benefits of a lower initial capital associated with a startup business that one forgoes owing to the long-term benefits associated with venturing into franchise business.

Depending on the individual needs and the performances of both the business and the audit team, change in auditors is also performed by several businesses, which in turn has either a positive or negative effect on the stock prices. This particular research has been focused on understanding the relation that change in auditors has with stock prices of a company. And, it could be obtained from this particular study that agency theory can be well associated with the employment of auditor agencies and that the change in auditors has a direct relation with the prices of stocks. 1. ... ry researchers on role of auditors, the relation between change in auditors and stock prices of client companies, and the positive and negative impacts of share prices on change in auditors. Both qualitative and quantitative data have been collected and analyzed to determine the reasons for change in auditors. Stock prices of client companies and characteristics of the firms significantly determine the relationship of the companies with their auditor firms. Different business organizations having different characteristics and processes in their businesses result in varying demands for the quality of audits. This is particularly in association with external auditors that perform an audit over the companies. Some of the common determinants of business firms for choosing the quality of auditors include their membership in the finance sector, leverage, size, profitability and their market-to-book ratio. Thus the choice of auditors by an organization is related to the above mentioned fact ors (Aksu, Onder and Saatcioglu 2007). The role of auditors takes place in a business environment that is highly regulated. Both the audit firms and the individual auditors have certain independent requirements along with ethical fulfillment that they need to encounter and follow (Great Britain 2011). Quality auditing is what is expected by every business organization and hence the choice and selection of quality audits is considered as essential for business firms. American And Korean Student Culture

American And Korean Student Culture In the current essay we will review the Cultural differences between American students and Korean students. In the modern world cultural relations are very important. Due to the globalization countries cooperate more closely and build new relationships built on the current trends. Although the cultural differences are considerable, there are many common things that can be found in different cultures. Modern people have almost unique goals in several areas, as the majority of the population wants to study and then to find a job that will suit a person. There are certain differences between American and Korean student in culture and other aspects. For example, according to Kara Miller (2009), among American students very often there is no change in effort and no improvement in time management. Cultural differences between American students and Korean students Often, it is difficult to balance studying and playing games and staying online. By the time students are in college, habits can be tough to change. If youre used to playing video games like Modern Warfare or Halo all night, how do you fit in four hours of homework? Or rest up for class? Sometimes, even foreign students do better in studies and have more intentions to study and to learn the foreign language. According to Kara Miller (2009), Too many 18-year-old Americans, meanwhile, text one another under their desks (certain they are sly enough to go unnoticed), check e-mail, decline to take notes, and appear tired and disengaged. There are many distractions and less discipline among American students, as stated in My lazy American students. It can be said that because of the certain aspects of the American culture, American students enjoy communication, they are used to using the technologies that are always near, and studying has to be diverse and interesting. That is why there ca n be seen clear differences between American students and students in other countries. Of course all American students are different, and many of them are talented, hard-working, they listen intently and pay attention to studies. The majority of American students use their knowledge, innovative approaches, which results in a creative work. These peculiarities belong to American students. Although, the creativity without knowledge does not bring any benefits. In 2007 it was reported that eighth graders in even our best-performing states like Massachusetts scored below peers in Singapore, South Korea, and Japan, while students in our worst-performing states like Mississippi were on par with eighth graders in Slovakia, Romania, and Russia., according to the American Institutes for Research. Also, there is a knowledge gap and the lack of the basic knowledge among American students. They prefer to concentrate only on what they are interested in and they do not want to know a little about everything. It can be also said that the time management is considered a problem among American students. They spend a lot of time going somewhere, even late at night. It is the way of life and the aspect of the culture that has to be accepted. Missing studies by different reasons is not a way out, as the best way to study is in the classroom. In 2002, it was found that most 18- to 24-year-olds could not find Afghanistan, Iraq, or Japan on a map, ranking them behind counterparts in Sweden, Great Britain, Canada, Italy, Japan, France, and Germany., according to National Geographic-Roper survey. It is sad that some students are not interested in the outer world, as they are focused on their problems and several topics that they are interested in. According to Kara Miller (2009), success is in the time management and in a globalizing economy, Americans inability to stay focused and work hard could prove to be a serious problem. Working hard is the main principle that has to be present in each culture in each country. In comparison with the American students, it is believed that Korean students make more efforts to study better and better, and finally succeed. Korean students are more responsible in their studies and they are not used to distract on other things. They are used to concentrate on studies and then to do everything else, as this is the rules of the implemented culture. According to South Korean students face long hours of study (2010) , Korean students spend up to 14 hours a day in some form of education, including after school classes, studying with a tutor or taking supplementary courses, such as English, Chinese, Music, and Maths.- Jeonju, South Korea. 24/01/2010. Studying for so long is determined by the effects and the expected outcome in the future, in getting the best possible job and life. Also, Korea has a long cultural tradition that places a strong emphasis on higher education, which contributes to the students international success. A middle school teacher Mr. Bae says that Korea wants to be the first among other countries. From elementary to high school, Korean students spend up to 14 hours a day, including after school classes, studying with a tutor or taking supplementary courses, such as English, Chinese, music, and math at the local neighborhood hogwon., according to South Korean students face long hours of study (2010). As a fact, a Korean students life is dominated by the need to pass an exam to gain entry into a high school and getting a high score to gain admittance into a prestigious university. Korean students have to build character and independence by being responsible for their schools janitorial work, which includes taking out the garbage, sweeping, vacuuming, and cleaning the toilets., according to South Korean students face long hours of study (2010). The considerable influence on Korean students comes from their parents, their culture, traditions, goals in life and the main aims. According to some independent opinions, Korean students study better, as it depends on the importance given to education in general, parental commitment to their childrens education, teachers preparation, and the significance of mathematics for every students successful future., according to Woo Hyung Whang (2011). The culture of Korea values scholarship and Confucianism is also very influential. As well, Parental dedication to childrens education is remarkable in Korea which determines the success of Korean students and their desire to study. Encouragement to study is present in the Korean culture and it is valued very much, as well as the order in everything and true devotion. According to Study compares American students with other countries (2007) , Concern that science and math achievement was not keeping pace with the nations economic competitors had been building even before the most recent Times survey, in which the highest-performing nations were Singapore, Taiwan, South Korea, Hong Kong and Japan. Today the level of competition among the countries is very high, and each country wants to ensure that its educational system is the best, the most effective and the most perspective. Promotion of education is extremely important and despite the cultural differences American and Korean students try to study better, to set goals and to succeed. It can be said that the culture has a considerable influence on studies, on students relation to them, and to the perspectives that may appear, as stated in Korean students flocking to Canada to study English (2006). I presume that it is important to respect both Korean and American culture, to use different approaches to educate students and to use various ways of evaluation of Korean and American students. It is important to create comfortable conditions for students and teachers, in order to provide a better educational process and to renew the intentions and desire of students to study more and better. Studying is important and cultural differences do not have to influence the educational process. All in all, it can be said that there have to be used different approaches according to cultural differences and peculiarities. Korean students should not be evaluated using the same way with American students. It is important to ensure that the evaluation will be different and that there will be used different approaches, more suitable for Koreans and American students. In some aspects there can be found considerable differences in the culture and the philosophy of the two countries, but the aim is the one- to study better.

The Battles Before The Battle Between The States :: essays research papers

The Battles Before The Battle Between The States Warning: THE COMMENTARY IN THE FOLLOWING IS THE SOLE PRODUCT OF THE AUTHOR, AND MAY CONTAIN SOME BIAS DUE TO THE BIAS CONTENT OF THE AUTHOR’S SOURCE OF INFORMATION, PLEASE READ WITH CARE. In 1861 the United States declared war on the seceded Confederate States of America. This war is more popularly known as the Civil War or the War Between the States. The war was a conflict that was inevitable because of the progression of dislike between the slave holding states and the free ones. The war had to happen because of the many disagreements that caused tension between the slave holding South and the free states in the North. There are many things that one party did to upset the other. One of the first notable things that started the disagreement between the North and the South was the idea of â€Å"Popular Sovereignty.† â€Å"Popular Sovereignty† was an idea created by Senator Lewis Cass, who said that the Missouri Compromise was out dated and that the citizens of a territory should "regulate their own internal concerns." (p. 459) Many Southern citizens liked the idea of â€Å"Popular Sovereignty,† for the reason that they could move their slaves to "undecided" territories. With this point for the South the North came back with one of their own. The North, battling in the government, decided to join three parties into one to create the Free-Soil party. Those three parties were "rebellious Democrats, Antislavery Whigs, and members of the Antislavery Liberty party." (p. 460) One of the main reasons that the Free-Soil party was created was to give voters a new party to choose from, rather than the two other main parties. In the 1848 election the Free-Soil party upset a small, but significant part of the vote, receiving 10.1 percent of the popular vote. Having one significant issue that the opposition did not care for, the great trio of Clay, Calhoun, and Webster had something up their sleeves. One of the greatest debates of the time, the Great Compromise, brought forth eight resolutions that solved all the issues. The eight resolutions are as follows: 1) Admit California as a free state, 2) organize the remainder of the Southwest with out restriction as to slavery, 3) deny Texas its extreme claim to a Rio Grande boundary up to its source, 4) compensate Texas for this by assuming the Texas debt, 5) uphold slavery in District of Colombia, 6) but abolish the slave trade across its boundaries, 7) adopt a more effective fugitive slave act, 8) and deny congressional authority to interfere with the interstate slave trade. Pre-1900 poetry and Atonement Comparison Essay

The poetry collection provides us with a myriad of examples of how many have to face barriers to love – some of our speakers struggle, whilst many prove love to be an indestructible force, mainly seen by writers during the earlier periods who followed more traditional values, believing in a more courtly style love such as Shakespeare in Sonnet 116. However, later on, for example in the Victorian period, as traditions fell to pieces and certain barriers became stronger than the idea of love, people had lost faith: such as Remember. Meanwhile, in Atonement, McEwan takes us on a journey through the love of Robbie and Cecilia who manage to overcome physical separation that many faced at this time due to the World War. He portrays a realistic, yet strong union, proving that even in the Modern times, love can overcome barriers. In the time of the 16th century, during the Renaissance, when Shakespeare famously published his collection of sonnets – including Sonnet 116 – barriers to love were almost seen as insignificant. Post plague, Shakespeare may be giving hope to those who wanted to hold onto tradition and religion, as the Renaissance marked a time of new ideas and a movement away from the typical ideas around love, which could be much alike McEwan in the sense that Robbie and Cecilia’s love was not broken through the war times. In Sonnet 116, love can overcome all; initially, Shakespeare strengthens the idea of love by naming the poem after the form it takes: a sonnet. Everything about this poem represents love, and nothing can get in its way, not even ‘tempests’, proving how powerful it is and how it can even overcome forces of nature. Society creates no boundaries in terms of love within this poem; the use of the metaphor of the ‘star’ signifies how love is not restricted and can be seen by all. Lastly, we see Shakespeare incorporating personification to illustrate the immortal aspect of love and how it overcomes the barrier of time: ‘Love is not Times Foole’. Clearly barriers of love are seen to be easily defeated, as McEwan also portrays in his novel that attempts to highlight Modern Age love, incorporating realistic scenarios such as the awkwardness in the library, and the issues faced due to war. Many lives were lost, and the story of Robbie and Cecilia could be considered a tragedy, as we discover they die at the end. However, our narrator Briony allows their love to transcend death and live on through use of metafiction: ‘the lovers survive and flourish’, and on paper they do. However, McEwan does highlight the truth and how sometimes, we can lose the ones we love and there is nothing we can do about it. Religion was a big deal prior to the Renaissance, but as soon as science and new ideas came into play, their began questioning of the churches authority. William Blake explores how the church becomes the force that prevents love and innocence in his poem: ‘The Garden of Love’. Much alike John Milton’s famous ‘Paradise Lost’, the poem sees religion in a critical manner, implying a need to move away from typical Christian convention. His use of ‘Thou shall not’ is a form of linguistic deviation to invoke a Biblical tone, and almost mocks the 10 commandments and sees religion as a denial of everything – even love itself. God, described as benevolent, has allowed ‘priests in black gowns’, with black signifying negativity, to walk their ‘rounds’ and observe us – not so loving after all. Our speaker uses internal rhyme to highlight how his ‘desires’ are metaphorically ‘binding with briars’, giving us a sense that doing the things that you love result in punishment. Here, love is faced with a barrier that society has pushed onto people and Blake is clearly trying to, along with Milton, become aware of this. Meanwhile, in Atonement, the idea of status can be a barrier to love, not only for Robbie and Cecilia, but Jack and Emily too. For higher classes, divorce was frowned upon, so although Emily ‘did not wish to be told’ about Jack and his absence, there was not much she could do. Meanwhile, Robbie and Cecilia had ‘known each other since they were seven’, yet she claimed ‘everything he did aimed to distance her’ just because he removed his shoes to refrain from dirtying the floor. Clearly, there was tension due to varying status, keeping the two apart for so long. Therefore, a clear barrier to love, and from moving on to continue to love, is status in Modern times. Finally, we have the Scrutiny, written by Richard Lovelace, who explores the barrier to love: lust and the need to expand horizons in terms of being with others. During the time, he, much alike other poets such as Donne, turned to carpe diem poetry. For the speaker, he ‘must all other Beauties’ – using imperatives to signify the importance of experience before settling down. The endless opportunities he has metaphorically pushes him to become a ‘skilful mineralist’, representing his need to collect a variety of things (women). Boredom had almost become a barrier to love, as well as selfishness. Meanwhile, we can similarly see that Jack, in Atonement, has too taken advantage of the other options and has taken to cheat on his wife. We also see Lola marrying her ‘rapist’, implying that not only selfishness, but shame can be a barrier to love due to the selfishness of others. Overall, barriers of love are seen to both insignificant, and also life changing. Love stories became ever harder to write, and McEwan has managed, by setting his novel at the beginning of the 20th century, where many barriers had to be faced, and love was challenged by war, separation of families and couples, and the struggles of status and judgements of society. Therefore, he has shown how easy it is to love in the 21st century, and how potentially love is much weaker as it does not have to overcome any significant obstacles, hence why 42% of marriages end in divorce. The poems can explore many barriers to love, and different approaches are taken on: traditional love that overcomes all, love that is stolen by new ideas such as the church, and a more selfish and arrogant take on love.

Interpretivist, on the other hand, believes that knowledge is from the mind of people, and it seeks to understand subjective meaning by interpreting ‘sense making’ (Stokes, 2011 pp75). Axiology means the concerned view of researchers towards values in research (Saunders et al., 2012). The authors cited Heron (1996) that research values provide the justifications and motivation of research activities, therefore it is worth doing the research.
